Current Activities: IAS is running projects with partners in America, Europe and Madagascar in support of the environment, ocean science, food security and sustainable economic development.

Background: The Institute for Applied Science Inc. (IAS) is a US corporation, based in Washington DC, and established in 1997 following the end of the Cold War in order to support US Government initiatives on nonproliferation and science for peace between the West and the newly independent states of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union.

IAS’ mission has evolved from its initial focus on East-West nonproliferation collaboration with national labs in central Europe and the Former Soviet Union, in order to promote scientific collaboration and commercialization of technology in other geographic areas of the globe as well as in the private sector.

Working Groups: IAS organizes its R&D activities into two major working groups to develop solutions to identified international science and technology shortfalls and requirements: Big Science and Small Science.

The Big Science Working Group focuses on promoting scientific and technical policy solutions, principally with regard to:

  • Environment
  • International Development
  • Ocean Science
  • Energy Security, Stability & Sustainability
  • Nonproliferation

The Small Science Working Group focuses on product development and commercialization, principally in aquaculture, food innovation, health & safety, personal protective equipment and telcoms.

  • Aquaculture & Food Security
  • Food Technology Innovation
  • Health & Safety tools
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Telecommunications

Deliverables:

  • Coordination of multilateral strategic talks, & international conferences.
  • Science for Peace advanced research workshops and working groups contributing to basic & applied research.
